Name Office Grade 2019 Goals
Kerri Hughes President 8th The students at JCIB work hard. I hope the board will sponsor fun events for the students to enjoy spending time with classmates outside of the classroom. I would also like to sponsor classroom grants for teachers.
Jereme Logan Vice President 6th It's difficult to place value on the impact a group of motivated, supportive parents and teachers can have on a child's life. It's an honor to help invest in all of our children. I'm excited to join the board of such a young organization and to help contribute to its development. My hope is to see membership grow and continue developing a productive partnership with JCIB faculty and administrators.
Donnisha Collier Treasurer 7th My goal is to help PTO be the backbone of JCIB School by supporting the students and staff. PTO does a lot behind the scenes and more members are needed for its success.
Tammy Benjamin Assistant Treasurer 7th As a member of the PTO Board, I am dedicated to increasing the community interactions for our children, teachers, and staff. We may not be physical neighbors, however, we can work together just the same. By working together we can serve as a source of support to improve our children’s educational experience.
Tiffaney Strayhorne Recording Secretary 6th I'd like to have more personal parental involvement and be a good resource and asset to the children.
Daphne Dansby Corresponding Secretary 8th My goal is to improve the PTO's relationship with parents and school staff. Communication is the key to improving relationships. Through the PTO Facebook account and blog, I hope to share important information with parents and faculty.
Angela Gohn Events Chairperson & 8th Grade Liaison 7th & 8th As a member of the 2019-2020 JCIB PG Campus PTO Board, I hope to build community among students and the parents of our JCIB family. I look forward to planning events, meeting more parents and working together to make this a great year for our kids and the JCIB faculty. I can’t wait to meet you at the next event!
Summer Axford Fundraising Chairperson 6th To grow family/community involvement and financial support for service projects, social events, student recognition, hospitality, building improvements, and a new teacher grant program.
Traci Franklin 6th Grade Liaison 6th Help with the development of activities and needs to enhance JCIB Middle life; make sure communication is open and given to all between School, PTO Board, Parents, and Students; encourage involvement between us all (it takes a village).
Valarie Moore 7th Grade Liaison 7th & 8th I hope to help the PTO meet communication goals as well as to fulfill initiatives to meet the needs of the teachers and students of JCIB PG campus.
Cathi Lindsey 7th Grade Liaison 7th As parents of seventh graders, I am becoming aware of how quickly our time at JCIBMYP is ticking by. My goal is to help connect parents/families and encourage communication and participation so that all of our kiddos have a great middle school experience.
Vicky M. Brandy 8th Grade Liaison 8th I hope to participate as often as I can throughout this school term, to provide useful input and share anything I can which will benefit our kids, the JCIB team, this team, and our school!

Adolescent Drug Use: Part 2

MEET LAURA  Laura Hope Laws was an active member of her Atlanta church’s youth group. She was known for helping people in a time of need, but she couldn’t help herself—she had a heroin use disorder. At 13, Laura experimented with alcohol and marijuana; at age 14 she started misusing prescription pain medications prescribed for a broken jaw, which led to an opioid use disorder. When her doctor quit prescribing them, she took other people’s pills and eventually turned to a cheaper and more available drug: heroin. She reached out to her family and they helped with treatment programs. Laura eventually spent 30 days in a residential treatment program, but the drugs were stronger than she was, and she relapsed and started taking heroin again. In the end, Laura overdosed on a mixture of the opioid morphine, alcohol, and cocaine when she was just 17. This is an example of drug use progression. At the same age as some of our children, Laura started experimenting with drugs and alcohol.  In 4

The Importance of Extracurricular Activities

Hi Family, School is in and we are getting into our study and homework routines.  Our children are learning.  The teachers are teaching.  The classroom routines are well on the way.  What more could there be?  Well, there are the extracurricular activities offered through the school.  Are you on the fence about your child being involved in extracurricular activities?  Let's talk about the benefits. Cultural Integration Many new students can experience “culture shock” when they first arrive at JCIB PG Campus. It's literally a whole new world. Some are in a school far from home with new students and new teachers.  The teaching style may be very different from what they are accustomed to. Getting involved in extracurricular activities can help students overcome this sensation and allow them to intimately understand the culture at their new school in a way that the typical classroom environment may not provide. For example, joining a student group can help a student meet a
