Opportunity for Spanish Students

This year, 7th and 8th students in Spanish class have the opportunity to participate in the 2020 Spanish Convention by the organization FCEA at the University of Alabama. At the convention, students will compete with other middle school and high school students across the state in events like oral proficiency, cultural art, and theatrical performance. A maximum of 25 students will be participating. In order to choose students for the convention and prepare students for the events in which they will participate, we will be having Spanish club on Wednesday mornings at 7:15am.

There will be an informational meeting for students Wednesday morning (11/13) at 7:30am for any interested 7th and 8th graders in Mrs. Alexander's classroom.

To participate in Spanish club and Spanish convention students must:

  • be in the 7th or 8th grade
  • maintain an A average in Spanish class
  • miss no more than 3 practices on Wednesday mornings


    • We will have a competition during club to determine who will participate at the convention. Not every club member is guaranteed to participate at the convention. If chosen to participate at the convention on April 17, 2020, there will be a $20 fee to help cover convention costs, t-shirts, and transportation.

    MEET LAURA  Laura Hope Laws was an active member of her Atlanta church’s youth group. She was known for helping people in a time of need, but she couldn’t help herself—she had a heroin use disorder. At 13, Laura experimented with alcohol and marijuana; at age 14 she started misusing prescription pain medications prescribed for a broken jaw, which led to an opioid use disorder. When her doctor quit prescribing them, she took other people’s pills and eventually turned to a cheaper and more available drug: heroin. She reached out to her family and they helped with treatment programs. Laura eventually spent 30 days in a residential treatment program, but the drugs were stronger than she was, and she relapsed and started taking heroin again. In the end, Laura overdosed on a mixture of the opioid morphine, alcohol, and cocaine when she was just 17. This is an example of drug use progression. At the same age as some of our children, Laura started experimenting with drugs and alcohol....

    The Importance of Extracurricular Activities
